Golden Ticket

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

I’ll admit to being somewhat confused by SEE tickets’ postage pricing structure:

Are the standing tickets somehow much heavier than the seated ones? I’d have thought that sending 3 pieces of paper through the post would be quite cheap, but then that’s probably why I’m not rich…

Uncool Birth-Date

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

Find out the Number 1 single and album on the day you were born.
Mine:
The Number 1 single was:
Cliff Richard - “We Don’t Talk Anymore”
The Number 1 album was:
Various artist compilation (WEA) - “The Best Disco Album In The World”
Sheesh.

Recent Shows

The Wrens
For the third time in quick succession, and I’m still nowhere near being bored of them. They always seem to put absolutely all of their energy into each show, and they’re so much fun to watch. The story of the band is kind of tragic: passed over by their record label when they were [...]

Rules for Self-Preservation

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

Ok, self, listen up. Time for a new ‘life rule’.
You are no longer allowed to go into Sister Ray or Mr CD on the weekend following payday. If fact, it would be best if you just kept clear of Berwick Street altogether. If you are able to avoid repeating today’s little incident in the [...]

Yay! … Wait … Boo!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Thought 1:

Holy crap! Look at that line-up! I must go to these shows. My life may depend on it!

Thought 2:

Great flying double damn monkey-fuck! That’s a lot of money! (and already sold out.)

Late Gig Reviews

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

Some shows that I went to a while back but have been too lazy to write anything about until now:

The Wrens - Borderline and Camden Barfly
They were absolutely great. The Meadowlands album has finally been released in the UK, and was getting some good press in the NME, so they came over to play 2 [...]

The Triangles

Saturday, November 26th, 2005

I realise that this site would be much more entertaining if it was just a proxy for WarrenEllis.com, so in the interest of stealing content wherever it’s available, you should go and listen to The Triangles now.
I’ll probably hate it tomorrow, but right now its the perfect musical antidote to acting like a sleep-deprived dork [...]

FLC - Livin’ In The City

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

Today I ramble about an album for no apparent reason and to no good end. The back button is up and to your left if you’ve got better things to do.
I’ve just got “Livin’ in the City”, the latest Fun Lovin’ Criminals album. The ultra-short review is that it’s great, and sees them getting back [...]

tATu vs Charlotte Church: Fight!

Faux lesbian Russian pop lasses tATu have threatened to kill Charlotte Church - and all because of something the gorgeous Welsh songstress said to PlayLouder.
When we got Charlotte in to review the singles, she said that “They just sound real… shit. And one of them’s a minger as well! That’s fucking [...]

Glósóli

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

Back to the silly music videos: Glósóli by Sigur Rós. The video’s pretty good, but really it’s just an excuse to listen to the song some more. Definitely the track of the year to date. Now, if only the rest of the album was as good as this.

Gang of Four, The Offspring

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

Gang of Four - The Barbican: Oh. Hell. Yes. Very, very close to being the best show I’ve ever seen. The only minus point was that it was in an all-seated venue, which is Just Not Right. Seriously, at the start of the show the people around us were yelling at us for dancing on [...]

New(ish) Albums

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

You should definitely buy
Golden Ocean - 50 Foot Wave: This is Kristen Hersh’s new band, and I’d somehow missed out on them for ages, but the album’s just great. It’s a lot more punky than Throwing Muses were (and obviously moreso than her solo stuff.) It sounds like it should make for an excellent live [...]

Pixies, Dinosaur Jr

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

Pixies - Meadowbank Stadium and Alexandra Palace: My favourite band, twice in one week. Life is good. The first show was outdoors at Meadowbank stadium in Edinburgh, and the second was indoors at the (huge) main hall in Alexandra palace in London. Tthe sound was much better at the first show, but it was evened [...]

Dresden Dolls, Weezer.

Monday, August 29th, 2005

I’ve just spent (almost) a week back in Edinburgh doing festivally things and visit-family-and-friends things and too-damn-much-driving things. I had a great time, but I’m ready for a holiday to recover from my holiday now. Anyway, there will be more reviews when I can focus my eyes properly again.
Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) - The [...]

Towns We’d Never Been To

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

I’ve had Black Cadilacs by Modest Mouse stuck in my head for about a week now. It’s a great song, but there are limits…
Playing it to myself repeatedly hasn’t helped getting rid of it, so I think the only solution might be to find a catchier song to replace it. Desperate times and all that. [...]
