Mirrorball 2007

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Keeping up a fine tradition, I went to 3 of the 4 Mirrorball programmes at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year. (The 4th was sold out, boo!)
For the uninitiated, the shows are themed collections of the best music videos of the year and tend to range from the fantastic to the WTF? This year’s shows [...]

Suffering for your Art

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

A co-worker who was at the festival the week before me told me I had to go and see the Circus of Horrors. I don’t know whether to be relieved or disappointed that I didn’t go:
A dwarf performer at the Edinburgh fringe festival had to be rushed to hospital after his penis got stuck to [...]

Pudding

Friday, October 13th, 2006

For various reasons, this stuck me as a thing Monsieur Edwards would approve of: There is a restaurant in New York which serves nothing but Rice Pudding.
Field trip, anyone?

Fringe Adventures 2006 - Part 4

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

Sheer laziness made me put off writing this for so long, but for completeness’ sake (and because in years to come I’ll probably want to know what I actually went to see) I present the last bits of my 2 weeks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Celeb Spotting: Alan Davies, and a very, very depressed looking [...]

Fringe Adventures 2006 - Part 3

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Celeb Spotting: Kevin Smith, Charlize Theron (sortof: there was a big crush of people outside of the cinema as we left, we saw some people walking down the red carpet and many photographers elbowing each other out of the way. We mostly ignored it and went into the pub next door. Shortly afterwards two of [...]

Fringe Adventures 2006 - Part 2

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Celebrity Spotting: Not totally sure about this, but I think I saw Doris Lessing at the book festival site in Charlotte Square. This celeb-spotting business is getting less appealing by the minute.
Show: Bill Bailey - Steampunk
This goes to the top of the list for this year so far. I’ve seen him quite a few times [...]

Fringe Adventures 2006 - Part 1

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Celebrity Spotting: Les Dennis and Steve Punt. Disappointing! Does not quite match up to seeing Summer Glau last year.
Show: Chanbara
Taiko drumming plus katanas from the choreographers of Kill Bill. Sadly, it was pretty disappointing. The drumming was good but it took a backseat to all of the jumping and sword-swiping (and unfortunate slapstick interludes.) It [...]

Cow Parade

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

Dear Edinburgh-ish people reading this, I have some questions about this Cow Parade dingus:

What the hell?
How many have been destroyed/stolen/”decorated” so far?

Beltane 2006

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

I appear to be in the wrong city for this year’s Beltane festival, but for any attending Edinburghers who happen to be reading this, then I hope you have fun.
Try not to let anyone catch on fire or fall down the hill or anything. (Or, if they do, then at least get some good [...]

Colossal

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

Too late to be of any use, but apparently there was a 16-metre screen set up in Bristo Square this evening for people to play Shadow of the Colossus. Any of you go?

Woooooo!

Scotland 18 - 12 England

Watched the match in a room filled with English people. May have done a little dance on the couch. All a bit of a blur.
Also, Hearts and Hibs both won their Scottish Cup matches today. I predict that Edinburgh will be a bit of a mess tonight.

Not Exactly ‘Crimewatch’ Standard

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

The police in Edinburgh are, if nothing else, amusingly optimistic
Police are hunting for a scruffy-looking bag-snatcher after a young woman was mugged in Edinburgh at the weekend.
The 22-year-old victim was walking through Anchor Close, just off the High Street, at about 1730 GMT on Saturday when she was approached from behind.
The man grabbed her handbag [...]

Beltane 2005

Sunday, May 1st, 2005

Some photos from this year’s Beltane Fire Festival.
Most of them aren’t great. The combination of a fairly basic camera, bright objects on a dark background, long exposure times, and constant jostling from the crowd put paid to that. The batteries in my camera were also running out, so I couldn’t really spend much [...]

Scary Beans

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

This guy is apparently still on the bridge (23:45 Sunday night). I hope they’re feeding him. He apparently first went up there during the early hours of Saturday morning, but didn’t get the attention of the police until about 07:30. Note that people threatening to jump off North Bridge isn’t particularly unusual, but they normally [...]
