The Flaming Lips @ Hammersmith Apollo

As fun as being in the nosebleed galleries at the top of the Albert Hall during a Flaming Lips show was, it turns out it can’t really compare to seeing them whilst jammed into the second row at the Hammersmith Apollo. Having a crazy-haired man in a 70’s suit crawling above your head in a giant inflatable plastic bubble is a disturbingly joyous experience. The previous show also loses out to this last one because the AH didn’t have them playing a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody that made half of the crowd lose their voices from singing along so loud.

I’ve been in an unbearably good mood for 2 days because of that show. I’m also still finding bits of confetti in various jacket pockets and haven’t quite managed to wash all of the glitter out of my hair yet. Getting the tube home after the concert was a strange experience. Initially you’re surrounded by people who were all at the show, but then as you change trains and get further out you find yourself surrounded by people who don’t understand quite why you’re covered in streamers and red-and-yellow paper squares.

They put so much work into their live shows that I’d be feel completely overwhelmed if I happened to be in any other band trying to compete with them. They were also in a pretty good mood because of the recent mid-term election results (they’ve been pretty fierce detractors of George W. Bush) and ‘The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song’ was especially euphoric as a result.

I’m honestly on the brink of going on a trip to Dublin to see them again this Sunday.
