Fringe Adventures 2006 - Part 1

Celebrity Spotting: Les Dennis and Steve Punt. Disappointing! Does not quite match up to seeing Summer Glau last year.

Show: Chanbara

Taiko drumming plus katanas from the choreographers of Kill Bill. Sadly, it was pretty disappointing. The drumming was good but it took a backseat to all of the jumping and sword-swiping (and unfortunate slapstick interludes.) It highlights how important foley effects are in films, since the stage show looked ok until any time the dancers clashed swords, producing a quiet plasic ‘thunk’ noise.

Show: Rich Hall

Excellent stand up show. I’ve seen him a few times before (doing both stand-up and his Otis Lee Crenshaw schtick,) and he’s always been great. He did get a bit derailed part way through an “America’s $7 trillion debt” skit when he asked the audience “Does Scotland have a national debt?” and got the response “I dunno, but my girlfried says she’ll give me blowjobs for six months if I get your autograph right this second!” Which is, I think, the weirdest heckle I’ve ever heard.

Pubs: Pleasance Courtyard, City Cafe, Assembly Rooms bar. All of which were ill-advised considering I’d spent all of the previous day queuing up at the airport, with a hangover, with no shoes, surrounded by policemen with machineguns, and after getting four hours of sleep the night before thanks to work’s summer barbeque (which culminated in football on Peter Molyneux’s rabbit-hole-infested lawn during which several people only narrowly avoided being maimed for life.)

Food: El-cheapo curry-like substance ’round the back of the Mosque. And very nice it was too, even if you do have to keep an eye out for the local pigeon population ’seasoning’ the food.

I agree with Paul about Chanbara, it was a shame in a way that they bothered with the swords. I’m seriously considering heading over to Milan to see Tao again though. They are playing from Oct 26th to Nov 19th.

I’ve also since discovered that Kodo - another famous Taiko group - were playing in Edinburgh in Feburary earlier this year. Quite annoyed that I missed this.
