Code Apocalypse

Well, it’s been an ‘interesting’ couple of weeks, for that special interpretation of ‘interesting’ that actually means ‘I often wished I could slump into a corner and die.’

12 days of working days, evenings, nights and weekends trying to get an alpha version of a program finished and sent out to various users in the company, all the while having uncontrollable coughing fits and wishing I could sleep properly. At one point I actually worked from home for a day because I hadn’t been able to sleep at all the previous night, and knew that if I tried to go into the office I’d fall asleep on the train and wake up in a train depot in Portsmouth. (I think this counts as my second ’sick day’ in the last 8.5 years, and I’ve been hugely annoyed at having to take the time off on both occasions.)

You can get some amazing swirly patterns happening in front of your eyes when all you’ve seen for days has been lines of C++ code and the bathroom sink that you’re coughing up green lung-foam into, I’ll tell you that much.

I think this has all happened because the universe could tell that I was planning to spend my free time during that period flat-hunting. That idea got knocked on the head after seeing 2 rooms and then having all of the above dumped on me from a great height.

But sod it! The damnable application is done and out in the wild now and I’m pretty much over the plague. Bug reports will roll in but I can fix those during ‘normal’ working hours. Maybe I’ll even get a chance to spend some time looking for somewhere nicer to live! (I realise that the more likely outcome is ‘continuing disaster’, but I’ve got at least one evening of being positive ahead of me. Hooray!)
