Today’s Link Grab-Bag

Coverflow is a fun OS X app that lets you browse your music collection by album artwork. (Warning: It’s really damn slow if you throw a large collection of songs at it.)

You already knew that Ferrofluids were cool, right? Well, look what happens when a drop is placed between 2 glass sheets with a rotating electromagnet under it.

(Notes: 1: The ‘aww awesome!‘ bits start about halfway through the video. 2: There are lots of other cool fluids videos on that site. 3: Links stolen from here.)

Stylus Magazine’s Top 50 singles of 2005 is interesting but kind of weird. It’s arranged so that most people will probably love 5-10 things in the list (in this case, according to me, you’ll want to hear The Mountain Goats, Spoon, Goldfrapp, Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem and Gorillaz,) but the weird thing is that these kind of lists are forced to be kind of useless. To really be effective they need to include easily playable versions of everything in the list, but that would be Illegal and Wrong, and would probably land them in trouble. So, yet again, music industry policy is shooting itself in the foot and stopping people finding out about and then buying music that they love.

Doesn’t the thought of being on a train controlled by a repressed camboy fill you with warm, fuzzy, murderous thoughts?
