The Kills
The Kills - at Liquid Room - This was just great. They’re a 2 piece girl/boy band who play really sleazy booze-soaked blues rock; imagine something between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Mazzy Star and you’re almost there.
Since they play along with a drum machine, there were some awkward bits as they had to restart songs after not being ready for the start, and - since this was in the Liquid Room - the vocals tended to be mush. This wasn’t so much of a problem though, since I knew most of the words and so could fill in. Anyway, how many times do you get to yell “Hey! Fuck the people!” in a packed room and not get any weird looks?
The crowd seemed fairly enthusiastic, but weirdly polite, given the music being played. We were able to just stroll right to the front, and there was no mosh pit to speak of. My ears were ringing, there was rock and/or roll, and a good time was had by all.
The support band, White Rose Movement were pretty unremarkable other than being the very reincarnation of the 80’s. Really, it was like every member had come dressed as their favourite New Romantic video (except the guitarist, who was a hairband away from being Penn Jillette.) They were ok, but none of their songs really stood out. If you want 80’s revival listening with a dash of Emo thrown in, then they might be for you.
