Of interest to everyone in the grips of a WoW addiction, a GPL’d World of Warcraft map viewer. It uses the datafiles directly from the game directory, and lets you fly around all of the in-game maps, as well as the hidden developer maps. There’s also a wiki documenting the game data formats they’ve reverse-engineered so far. This is really impressive. Once there’s a proper lighting model and light-bloom effect it should all be pretty convincing. Windows only for the time being. I spent a few hours seeing how much it would take to cobble together a Mac version, but my crusty old Powerbook really isn’t up to the job at all, and the whole experience was painfully slow.

Proof, if any were needed, that airport baggage handlers can be kind of creepy.
