Gang of Four, The Offspring

Gang of Four - The Barbican: Oh. Hell. Yes. Very, very close to being the best show I’ve ever seen. The only minus point was that it was in an all-seated venue, which is Just Not Right. Seriously, at the start of the show the people around us were yelling at us for dancing on our seats. Later on they thankfully seemed to remember that they weren’t at the opera and joined in.

This was part of the Don’t Look Back series, where a band plays one of their old albums right the way through. They played ‘Entertainment‘, and some other stuff, which basically ensured that I was one of the youngest people in the crowd, which felt kind of weird. (The album came out the year I was born.)

Anyway, more shows like this please! All gigs should involve the lead singer spending an entire song beating a microwave oven with a baseball bat.

I also need to look up who the support band were, since they were pretty good too. (By ‘pretty good’ I mean ‘have obviously listened to a lot of Gang of Four records in the past’)

The Offspring - Brixton Academy: I have no excuse for this, other than some kind of high school nostalgia trip. Once you can get past the fact that all of their songs are essentially the same it was reasonably entertaining, but it all seemed a bit flat. Whether this was down to the band or the BA’s usual “sound crew should be fired” levels of sound quality, I’m not sure. Decent enough, but I was hoping for something more.

Support Acts: The Letters Organize who were shouty and boring, and Send More Paramedics who I didn’t see because I got there late. Might have been worth it just to see the reaction of all the kids in the crowd.
