Contingency fund

  • Definition: A quantity of time and/or money which will, without fail, be entirely exhausted by the end of any given project. Even after taking into account the “Pick the largest number required, then double it” rule, this margin of error will be used in full. A new term is required for this concept because this one isn’t doing the job at all.
  • Example: Driving a van filled with furniture, clothes, computer bits, CDs and other kipple from Edinburgh to a new flat in London, unloading, and intending to catch a flight back to Edinburgh later that day. Making it to the checkin desk with only minutes to spare, despite multiple hours of contingency time being built in.
  • Conclusion: Moving house sucks.
